Abstract
The chapter maps the influence of the graphic user interface (GUI) on imaginations of urban form, alighting on the flexibility that urban space is granted by films and videogames like Inception (2010), Doctor Strange (2016) and SimCity (1989–ongoing), among others. The cities in these texts propagate an urban ideal of literal and metaphorical flexibility: characters wave their hands and reorganise city blocks like so many program windows. Disregarding material restrictions and messy complexities, and instead bestowing physical structures with instant flexibility and personalisation, these representations seek to endow built space with the same malleability that we find in the GUI. This imagination of urban space is then also found in navigation technologies like Google Maps and Google Street View, which create individualised and interactive augmentations or replacements of lived urban space. The result is the inculcation of a graphic urban interface – an experience of urban navigation indebted to desktop use. Unfortunately, such graphic urban interfaces are only a dream of digital urban possibility, and this chapter also critiques some of the ways in which such a visuality disregards the realities of unfolding urban histories and the lived experiences of urban inhabitants.
