A Kansas City, Kansas, restaurant continues bringing homemade Mexican dishes to the Greater Kansas City area.
Mi Casa Bonita Grill & Bar, located at 1709 Steele Road, recently celebrated its eighth anniversary.
For owner Carmen Lopez, the restaurant is a family business and the result of years of hard work. She started making tamales and similar bites like that, which she calls “antojitos,” to help support her family. She sold food around construction sites. When her son was about to graduate college, he promised to rent a place for her to sell food.
“Near my house, there was a place to rent and he rented that place as soon as he graduated,” Lopez said.
It was May 2016 when they opened Mi Casa Bonita as a family restaurant, offering hot soups, chilaquiles and enchiladas, among other similar traditional Mexican fare. For Lopez, a native of Veracruz, Mexico, what sets Mi Casa Bonita apart from similar area restaurants is the homemade feel to the Veracruz-style food.
“Everything is made Veracruz-style,” she said. “And everything is homemade. We don’t use any artificial preservatives; everything is made the day of.”
The journey to today hasn’t always been easy, Lopez acknowledged. The COVID pandemic was perhaps the biggest challenge.
“When the pandemic came, I wanted to close everything and leave everything behind,” she said. “I kept at it because of the help from my clients and from God.”
Her family also was pivotal during that time, Lopez said.
The key to maintaining a restaurant is perseverance, according to Lopez.
“There are days where sales are low, but you have to keep going, no matter the hour or if you’re tired,” she advised. “Everything takes hard work, so you have to keep at it.”
Mi Casa Bonita is open 9 a.m.-8 p.m. Monday-Thursday, 9 a.m.-10 p.m. Fridays, and 8 a.m.-10 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays.
