Pokémon Unite Surpasses 70 Million Downloads On Switch And Mobile (2024)

A MOBA powerhouse

When Pokémon Unite was originally revealed in June 2020, it didn't go down well with the Pokémon community at the time. The reveal trailer generated 150,000 dislikes in less than 24 hours and even managed to outdo the reveal of Metroid Prime: Federation Force, which had over 90k dislikes in less than a day.

Fast forward to April 2022, and it's a completely different situation for the free-to-play MOBA-style Pokémon game. It's safe to say Unite is big, like really big - with the latest announcement from The Pokémon Company revealing combined Nintendo Switch and mobile downloads have now exceeded 70 million worldwide.

Pokémon Unite has gone from strength to strength since the original launch. Most recently, the game added Azumarill as a new playable fighter, following on from the release of Duraludon in March. Here's a new trailer - including a Google translation of the description, noting how 70 million downloads have now been exceeded:

"Team strategy battle game "Pokemon Unite" has exceeded 70 million downloads worldwide! Both the Nintendo Switch version and the smartphone version are now being distributed! This is a new Pokemon battle. Evolve and score goals. The key to the game is unity."

Have you downloaded Unite on Switch, mobile, or both platforms? Tell us down in the comments.

Just not as good as classic mobas, too simplistic.

Yes and it has one of the most toxic Communities I have ever encountered. When the game launched I thought they would be laid back and easy to get along with but sadly they're just like any other angry bunch who are incapable of enjoying anything. I stopped playing recently because of these Players.

This is based on my own personal experience and I'm not referring to the entire Playerbase I'm referring to the Players I've met online myself. Just wanted to clarify that so as to avoid any misunderstanding.

the irony of hate, the more they hate it, the more fame it has, in other words, on their face haters.

Well, Congratulations on the success of this game, the truth is that I had no interest because the type of game, which is not to my liking (it's not hate, in case you think so), however, it really convinced me and I enjoy it a lot, well, in a "calm" way.

@valharian
In some cases, some simple is better, and this game is not necessary that complexity, everyone can play without problems

@valharian you say that like it’s a bad thing.
Heck me and my sister like it because it’s simple and easy to play.

Even with Zappos being completely overbearing and even in games where my team decides triple jungle is a good idea

I really love this game, and hope it continues to do well.

@valharian
Sometimes, simplicity is the answer. Just consider how many people would be introduced to a MOBA when it's much easier to learn than others. I would say the same for most genres, actually.

I like this game, it’s fun. My biggest problem is the lack of content updates it has. It’s been getting a lot of new skins and characters but they still only have 1 main map to play on, and the same 3 rotating quick maps

@OnlyItsMeReid 100% agree. One if their most recent surveys asked if we would like to see an adventure/story mode. My wife and I voted yes.

@valharian I’m a heavy moba game fanatic, but I gotta say I love how simple and easygoing this game can be, plus, jumping in and out of a match is great.

And if I get grifters or afk teammates the match won’t last like half an hour, just ten.

Tencent is probably happy.

I guess I count as two of those since I started on Switch and then switched to mobile.

@Snatcher Same, I've put a lot of hours into other MOBAs but really only play Unite anymore since it's a lot quicker with less pressure to win when there's no trash talking text box or 20-30 minutes worth of time spent.

@SteamEngenius Yes, sometimes simple is the best.

I'm one of the 70mill, but I never made it past all the terms and conditions you have to sign just to play it. Just left a bad taste in my mouth so had it deleted. I wonder how many others did the same

I only wish they'd add more content faster instead of a drip feed. Or at least, actual content - they seem to release overpriced skins pretty regularly. They've pretty much only added Pokémon since launch, and exactly 3 Held Items.

Hopefully they have something planned for this milestone, or at least the 1 Year Anniversary. Maybe change how the Quick Battle works, where instead of having one Map per day, turn it into a playlist where each person votes for a map, and include the limited time Event game mods like the Halloween, Christmas, & Full-Fury Battle ones.

70 million downloads is quite a lot for a MOBA, which is a pretty niche genre.

Q : Have you downloaded Unite on Switch?

Me : NO. I never like MOBA games. I don't like free-2-play games.

@Axecon Niche??? So League of Legends is consider niche to you? Because that is a MOBA. It isn't a niche genre tbh.

@IceEarthGuard I don't wanna sound too ignorant but I don't really know what League of Legends is. I've heard of the name and that it has a dedicated following but that's just about it. But I'm a pretty casual gamer, I just know about Nintendo games, platforms, and shooters/sports games. Most of my friends also don't really play much beyond shooters and Smash Bros and I would be surprised if they even knew what a MOBA is. It's hard to gauge how popular multiplayer online battle arena games are because they operate on the freemium model and rarely post financial numbers (Just because a game is downloaded doesn't mean it was played much if at all and it does not conveys profit margins/popularity).

  • IceEarthGuard

@Axecon Oh, that is understandable, and makes sense.

For me I don't really play MOBAs but I do know that some are popular. League of Legends for example is one of the most popular ones and have a huge player base with millions of people playing it still.

I have downloaded this 3 times. Twice on Switch and once on mobile, but I still haven’t played it.
